How to Prepare Clothes for Alterations

A little preparation can make a clothing fitting more useful and help your tailor understand the result you want. Bring the garment in its current condition, along with the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear with it. Think about where the fit feels off and how you expect to use the garment. Clear, specific details give your tailor a practical starting point for recommending alterations and checking the fit.

Bring the Complete Outfit

Bring the garment you want altered, plus any pieces that affect how it sits on your body. For a dress, that may include shapewear or a slip. For trousers, bring the belt you usually wear if it changes how the waistband sits. If you are altering a jacket or skirt to coordinate with another item, bring that piece too.

Wear or bring the undergarments you expect to use with the garment. Different bras, layers, or shapewear can change the fit and length, especially around the bust, waist, and hips. If the garment needs cleaning, take care of that beforehand; your tailor should be able to assess the fabric and fit without stains, odors, or dampness getting in the way.

Wear the Right Shoes

Bring the shoes you intend to wear with the garment, particularly for pants, jumpsuits, and long dresses. Heel height affects where a hem falls and how the garment moves when you walk. If you have not chosen shoes yet, bring a pair with a similar heel height and sole thickness, then tell the tailor that your final choice may differ.

Try on the garment with the shoes during the fitting. Stand naturally, walk a few steps, and check the hem from the front and sides. For trousers, consider whether you want them to break over the shoe, sit above it, or stop at another point. Describe the look you prefer rather than relying on a general request such as “shorter.”

Explain the Fit You Want

Before the fitting, notice what feels uncomfortable or looks out of balance. Point out areas that pull, gape, bunch, or restrict movement. Explain whether you want a closer fit, more room, or a specific change in length. If you are unsure what adjustment is possible, show the issue and ask your tailor to explain the options.

Share how and when you plan to wear the garment. A dress for standing at an event may need a different hem or ease of movement than a dress you will wear while walking or dancing. Mention any fit preferences that matter to you, such as sleeve coverage or room to sit comfortably. Be direct about what you like and what you want changed.

Check Details Before You Leave

Ask what alterations the tailor recommends, what will change, and whether the fabric or construction places limits on the result. Confirm any important details, such as hem length, sleeve length, waist placement, or how closely the garment should fit. If you have more than one item, discuss each one separately so the instructions stay clear.

Before leaving, confirm the next step and whether you need to return for another fitting. Ask if you should bring the same shoes or undergarments next time. At Victoria Fit Studio, you can discuss your garment and fit preferences during a fitting; clear expectations help guide the alteration from the start.

For a smoother fitting, bring the full outfit, wear the shoes you plan to use, and describe how you want the garment to feel and look. Point out specific problem areas, then confirm the agreed changes before you leave. With those details ready, you can make better use of your appointment and move toward a fit that works for you.
